Be Your Own Hero

Are you always the victim? Are things always happening to you? Do uncontrollable setbacks derail your progress?

When will you become the hero of your own story? The dictator of your own life, the sole advisor of your decisions. It’s 100 percent true that we can’t control all the annoying snowballs that life tosses our way. BUT what we do control is how we respond. You have all heard it before…

Get knocked down 9 times, get up 10.

The path to success is not linear, not easy, and it can be straight up so ridiculous it makes you cry or laugh. But it will be worth it if you don’t give up.

The easy option is to throw in the towel when things get tough. Unfortunately there is no payoff to giving up on your goals…just a good dose of regret. So I guess the best thing we can do is, keep on truckin so you truly do end up being the hero of your own story. The one that was relentless enough to keep rolling the ball forward even when you get kicked all the way back down the hill. You cry, you laugh, you regroup, you go get that ball and climb back up hill.

This is how we persevere, this is how we WIN.

We had one of those crazy weeks recently. Lots of changes happening in our lives…starting with the obvious general stress of running a business through a pandemic, growing a human, doctors appointments, coming back from traveling to 12 inches of snow, trying to sell our house, searching for a new house, house inspection showing a gas leak, fixing the gas leak meant losing heat and access to our range/stove for a couple days with negative temperatures outside, changing midwife groups because we weren’t pleased with current service.

Sometimes you have to sit down and laugh a little and wonder when your “break” is coming. Nothing else can go wrong right? What’s the appropriate mentality to have when things just don’t seem to be going your way – most would say stay positive. That can definitely be HARD. When I list all those things off, I realize I am totally victimizing myself.

I still have every right to cry a little, laugh a lot, be frustrated with the situations BUT the bottom line is, no one is going to save us except for US. We remain the victim of our story if we quit and throw in the towel. We become the hero when we approach everything head on and come out on the other side way stronger than when we started. That’s always the route I want to take. I might complain and get grumpy but ultimately I know we get shit done and I am proud of that.

I know everyone has had weeks, months, years where they felt like the hits kept coming. Next time you find yourself becoming the victim, take a breath and figure out the best plan of action to get back on track. Focus on the things we can control and do our best to refocus, regroup and get shit done.

That’s what successful humans do – we become the hero of our own story because we may not be in charge of things that happen in our lives but we are in control of how we respond to adversity.
