Matt Ubrig – June 2021

Biography

How long have you been part of the BluCru?

I joined Bluprint in December 2019 and have been coming consistently 3-5 times per week for a year and a half — even through the pandemic!

What was the problem you were having before you discovered Bluprint?

I’ve never felt comfortable in a regular gym. I would go and feel like a total fish out of water, not knowing how to start or what to do, while everyone else looked like they knew exactly what they were doing and appeared to be getting the results they were wanting. These feelings led to really inconsistent training — maybe 2 or 3 times per week on random days — with no plan of attack. I know I wanted to make a change in my fitness, but didn’t know what I was doing.

Take us to the moment you realized what you were now doing was working.

It might have been about one or two months in and I felt like I couldn’t get enough. The WODs were challenging, but every time they were posted I thought, “that sounds fun!” I actually have to tell myself to take a rest day and then decide which workout I wouldn’t mind missing. I have never in my life been that person. It’s crazy!

What is your biggest accomplishment at Bluprint?

My upper body strength has never been great, but I finally pushed through a plateau I had been experiencing with overhead strict press. This has always felt like my weakest movement and it seemed I could never get past 75 pounds when I would do this movement on my own. In March 2021 I performed a one-rep max of 105!

What is your favorite thing to do at Bluprint?

I love the movements that make you look like a total badass — deadlifts, snatches, and cleans make me feel strong and powerful.

What keeps you coming back to Bluprint?

Bluprint felt different right off the bat because the environment felt so welcoming. The coaches greeted me as soon as I walked in and made me feel like I belonged there and didn’t judge me for where I was at. I like that the coaches push me to go outside of my comfort zone, yet also strive to know my limits and work with them.

What would you tell someone considering joining?

You’ll be surprised at what you’re going to achieve! If you stay coachable, you will be coached. (see about joining HERE).

What do you do for fun?

I’m a pretty avid reader and I really enjoy baking. I’m also a pretty frequent concert-goer.

What’s your favorite food?

I could always go for a good burger and I don’t think I’ll ever not want tacos.
